Shop SE6: Jerk Off BBQ

Jerk Off BBQ started in a family kitchen in South East London, and has since popped up at events like the monthly Catford Food Market, Shoreditch Urban Food Fest and Brickfields Bar Brockley. “Our passion for cooking started at home with family and is always the centre and heart of our recipes. We've drawn from Bajan and Jamaican roots to give the authenticity to our dishes and we aim to keep it that way,” the founders, Daniel and Heleena, explain. The team are excited to announce the opening of a permanent spot at the new Catford Mews venue in September, where they will be serving food six days a week!

How did you start the business?

I believe that if you want to do something, you have to just go out and do it. I did Lee Gate market first, and then the first Catford Gin Festival where we met Team Catford. That’s how we then got involved with the Catford Food Market.

What has being involved with the Catford Food Market and Catford Cornucopia done for your business?

It’s given us exposure, raised brand awareness and generated income for the business.

Catford Cornucopia was a space where you could shop for local products and get involved with what’s happening in the local community. We’re from around here which is part of the ethos for us as traders, so that’s great.

How do you feel about Catford being regenerated?

I think it needs it. A lot of people don’t like regeneration, they call it gentrification but I don't think people truly understand what gentrification means. I think Catford is ready. Regeneration is a good thing, as long as there are community values kept in place and it incorporates what people actually want.

This is the beginning of an exciting time for Catford Town Centre. The more people involved, the better the needs of the whole community will be reflected.
